Who could resist buying a set of 10 CDs of Gypsy Music? Frankly I couldn't, as I'm a performer of Hungarian and Romanian Gypsy (Rroma) music, and the price for this set was pretty good.Be warned: it seems someone may have ripped off other CDs in making this set. For example, CD-7 is a copy of tracks 1-12 of Kurbeti:Music of Albania's Gypsies. Track 13 from Kurbeti is found as Track 13 on CD-9.This collection has many styles of "gypsy" music from various countries. Liner notes are lacking, but my best guess is that it covers Hungary, Romania, Albania, Turkey, Greece, Moldova, and Russia. You'll hear a few Classical standards thrown in, such as Hora Staccato, Mendelssohn's Wedding Processional March, and The Blue Danube. Luckily only a few of those. What you'll hear more of is Roma ensembles (similar to Parno Graszt) with traditional Roma singing. I think this is the strongest part of the collection. But it's mixed in with all the other types of music. They include some tracks which feature Hungarian folk musical instruments (one each of duda and hurdy-gurdy) as well as cimbalom. There is also a lot of Hungarian Nota style music, and even a few tracks featuring the amazing Greek clarinetist Vasilios Saleas!I give this collection 3 stars, because it's such a hodge-podge of music and styles, and because some of the tracks seem like they may be mislabeled. But the performances are quite good.
